RENO, Nev. (AP) — Libraries and parks would take the biggest hit under a budget-cutting move taken by Washoe County commissioners.
Their budgets could be cut by as much as 36 percent under a tiered approach adopted Friday as a way to close a $47 million county budget gap.
County Library Director Arnold Maurins says losing $4 million from a $11.2 million budget would mean reduced hours, branch closures and layoffs.
County Parks Director Doug Doolitte says he will look to volunteers to help with seasonal labor to avoid laying off his regular staff.
Under the targets adopted by commissioners, the sheriff's office would be cut the least at 6 percent.
Reno's unemployment rate has hit 11 percent and foreclosures have increased to one for every 107 homes.
