Virginia City — This historic old mining town comes alive with spirits and more for the annual "Ghost Night" Halloween celebration on Friday, October 31, 2008.
Among the scary and fun happenings are a parade and costume contest, haunted train, schools, mills and more.
☻Starting off the night, the goblins will be out for the 4th annual Goblin Parade, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Virginia City Jerky Company, 208 South C St., Virginia City. Lineup and registration will begin at 4 p.m. The parade will have three judges offering awards for Best Costume, Scariest Costume, and Most Original Costume, in adult and child categories. Child is under 16. Entrance to the parade is free; donations are accepted.
☻There will be Safe Trick Or Treating on C Street beginning at dusk, with many stores, saloons and restaurants open to hand out candy for the little goblins!
☻The traditional "Haunted Hallways" tour of the historic Fourth Ward School will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Everyone believes the school is haunted. Find out for your self on Ghost Night. Cost is $5 for adults; $3 for kids ages 6-16.
☻The Silver Terrace Cemeteries will be open for the brave-hearted to wander through from 6 to 10 p.m. Bring a flashlight. Cost is $4 for adults; $2 for kids.
☻The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will have their annual "Haunted Train," at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. This year they will have an enclosed car in case of cold weather. Who knows what may pop out at you in the tunnel! Cost is $10 for adults; $4 for kids.
☻At the new Comstock Gold Mill across from the train depot is the "Haunted Mill on the Hill" with tours for 10 hardy people at a time from 6 to 10 p.m. This will be the scariest event of them all, the spirits say, with lots of frightful goings-on. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for kids; or $10 for families of four.
☻The Ramada Inn and Piper's Opera House are combining for a party on Halloween that will include the 7 p.m. Haunted Train Ride, and an 8 p.m. dance and costume contest at Piper's Opera House. Call the Ramada for room and event package price. For adults only.
